Barbados’ Inconsistencies

Introduction

Barbados team has been officially eliminated from qualifying for the top 4 for CPL 2021. If we look back historically except 2019, they’ve had disappointing finishes in the last few seasons.

Musical chairs in batting order

If we closely dissect the 2021 season, especially their batting performances, we would notice that there isn’t a settled nature of their lineup. This is generally a tendency of a struggling team. Azam Khan is their highest run getter who has batted lower in their batting order. Additionally he hasn’t featured in all of their games either. There has been spurts of brilliance from Kyle Mayers, Glen Philips & Shai Hope but no consistency. Experienced Johnson Charles has been the only consistent figure in their batting as an opener throughout. However he hasn’t really set the world on fire by striking at 123 runs per 100 balls. Their Captain Jason holder has also accepted the fact that run scoring was quite a task for them this year.

Kyle Mayers & Shai Hope have been floating with different batting positions throughout the season. the below visual shows the scoring patterns of these 2 players in various positions.

Glen Philips who was one of the players to look out for in the T20 format this year. Thanks to his outstanding performances for Auckland earlier in the year. However his performances with Barbados Royals in the CPL this year was quite inconsistent & lackluster as described in the visual below.

Bowling’s inconsistencies

Mohammad Amir with the new ball has been a standout performer with strike rate which reflects that he would pick minimum 2 wickets a game while having a phenomenal economy under 6 Rpo.

However the supporting casts were missing for Barbados as Oshane Thomas did manage to keep the runs in check with economy of 7.2 Rpo, but his sky rocketing strike rate of 29 indicates he rarely picked wickets during those crucial overs.

Mohammad Amir has had an indifferent 2021 before the CPL, hence his performances with Barbados have been quite incredible as the below Visual depicts.

Similar to selections in batting even in bowling, they had some occasional stellar performances. Reifer & Young had their moments during the CPL 2021. Jason holder the bowler also hasn’t been a wicket taking option during this season. Hayden Walsh Jr. Has had a great CPL record to go along with his selection for national team. He would expect better return than this year. The below Visual depicts a clear distinction between Amir & the Rest of the bowlers.

Concluding thoughts

Looking forward for next season, Barbados need to define roles appropriately in their batting. Also in their bowling, they would need more incisive performances during the season. They would need more guys to out their hands up to contribute so that they have opportunities to Qualify in the TOP 4 in 2022.
