As Punjab kings are lying at the bottom half of the table, things have got extremely desperate for them when we approach the business end of IPL 2021. They would have very little breathing space, in terms of lapses with the number of games remaining. Over the last couple of seasons, Punjab has been known for a very top order heavy batting unit. They have got explosive guys who can take a bowling apart on any given day.
During the current season they have compensated with some very good finishers as a part of their squad to make it an well rounded batting unit.
However if we look at the bowling side of things for Punjab kings, we would see that they lack a bit of Depth with not many options to play around with in this department.
Since the Punjab kings have just won three games, one of the stand out features of the same is that in couple of those wins, they were able to successfully defend their total. The margin by which they were able to defend them was quite impressive. In a must win scenario going forward, they would want more such performances by their entire bowling unit, rather than few players contributing within few segments of the game.
Spinner Arshdeep Singh was one of the finds for Punjab kings earlier in the season. It seems like he has been improving with every season that he is playing. One of the memorable performances by him, was against one of the strong teams this season RCB. He picked up the three big fishes (Kohli, ABD & Maxwell) during his spell.
This was one out of those two occasions where Punjab was able to successfully defend the total emphatically. The below visual will illustrate the improvement in Arshdeep’ s performances over the last three seasons.
One of the standout features here is that his wickets column keeps on growing, which is a very welcome news for any team management. In addition to his ever-decreasing bowling strike rate, indicating the fact that he has become more of a wicket-taker for Punjab than ever before.
The below visual will indicate on how he has been utilized during the different phases of the innings and what has been the output that he has provided to Punjab during the same.
It indicates the fact that he has done a lot of bowling during the difficult phases in the power play. He has had decent amount of success by doing this , however the striking feature is that the way he has picked up wickets during the slog overs , indicates that he has a potential to be extremely flexible & go-to option for his captain KL Rahul. It would be interesting to see at which phase of the inning he’s used for the remainder of this year’s IPL.
Shami vs. Ellis as Slog over Specialists
As we all know the level of difficulty a bowler must go through while bowling during the slog overs, where the focus is on limiting the damage rather than picking Wickets on most occasions. Punjab kings as well have found this phase to be a rough one in the recent times. Let’s have a look off to such bowlers who would be playing a crucial role during this phase for Punjab kings.
Mohammed Shami has been an experienced campaigner and a leader of the bowling set up. With loads of experience and also having they know how of bowling during this phase of a T20 innings, it would be quite surprising to understand how he has fared for Punjab over the last 3 seasons. His economy rate has been close to 11 runs per over during this phase.
Nathan Ellis is a recent addition to the Punjab kings squad. He has three years of experience in the big bash league down under in Australia. He has had a tremendous last couple of seasons for the Hobart hurricanes. One of the key features for Ellis is that he to picks up a lot of wickets towards the slog overs of a t 20 game with an Economy rate below 9 RPO.
The below visual is a comparison between Mohammed Shami and Nathan Ellis during the slog overs.
One of the key call outs from the above visual is that although both bowlers pick big chunk of their wickets during the slog overs in a T20 game, the economy rate of Nathan Ellis is quite impressive given the kind of destruction which happens during this phase of the game. Couple of things to note here, the above stats for Mohammed Shami are for Punjab over the last three years and Nathan Ellis’ performances for Hobart hurricanes. When they both complement each other for Punjab it would be very interesting to see how they both perform during this crucial phase of T20 innings.
