Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Warner Effect

Introduction

Sunrisers Hyderabad is a team which is one of the better bowling attacks in the League. Also it has a very strong Top order batting line-up which has boosted them to greater heights in the past. They have won the title in 2016. Since then they have always been part of the Top 4 at the end of the league stages.

SRH Top order Batting powerhouse

Regarding their Top order bowling, their charismatic captain David Warner has been their pillar at the top of the order over half a decade. He has been a prolific run getter almost every season for them. Home & away, chasing or setting total, Warner has rarely failed for SRH. His numbers speak for himself.

Kane Williamson , the maverick NZ superstar has made great contributions not only as batsmen but also a standing Captain in season of 2018 as well. He is super flexible as he sometimes bats lower in the middle order to stabilize their younger middle/lower middle order.

Manish Pandey is yet another veteran with loads of IPL experience. Has played for 2 other teams prior to SRH (Deccan Chargers & KKR). He has largely played a role in the middle order for majority of his career. However with SRH has added responsibility of holding the innings together. He is surrounded explosive overseas batsmen and inexperienced Indian players in the batting order. His role becomes pivotal in such a scenario.

Comparing Scoring patterns of SRH top order

If we compare the Boundary frequency for each of these players especially in the last 2 seasons ( IPL 2019 & 2020), we see that they score a boundary after approximate every 5 to 7 balls. However the biggest insight is their scoring rates between them. Warner strikes at a highest strike rate , while Williamson & Pandey score at much lower strike rate.

This goes to prove 2 things

  • Rotation of Strike needs to be improved by Both Pandey & Williamson
  • Reduction in Dot balls is desperately needed for them to up their scoring rate.

Closing

If they are able to correct this then based on the boundary frequency, Pandey & Kane would be able to catchup to the Warner Express train. This eventually will help SRH big time in their batting.
