The WT20 being shifted to UAE in the month of October 2021 from India. This will take place after a month of IPL 2021 action on the same venues. Potentially some of the pitches in the ICC event might just tire out quicker than usual. If this does happen, it would bring the Spinners in the spotlight much earlier than usual. Hence every team would be keen to capitalize & buffer up their spin resources.
In the current squad we are looking at couple of young spinners Fabian Allen and Hayden Walsh junior.
Fabian Allen- Powerplay Specialist
He has played 21 games starting 2018 for the Windies. On most occasions he has been called upon to do the challenging job of bowling inside the batting power play restrictions.
As we all know that during this time, there are only two fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle. This is the time when the top order batsman looks to go over the top of the infield, to get the team off to a brisk start. Apart from spin bowling he also is very handy down the order who can add valuable runs towards the end of any innings. If we dissect his short career till now, below visual will indicate that he loves bowling in the power play.
It shows that inspite of very limited protection in the outfield, he has been able to Economy rate down to 6 runs a per over. He is also picking wickets which can be massive momentum breaking moments as a fielding team.
Retrospectively whenever he has been called to bowl in the middle of the innings, where there is ample protection, he seems to be less effective. His Economy rate goes up to 8 RPO & also he rarely picks wickets as his Bowling Strike rate shoots up to 28 balls per Wicket.
Fabian Allen also has another distinguished factor while bowling in Powerplays & that is “Dot Ball Percentage”. He has predominantly higher level of Dot balls % over the course of his Career as explained on the below visual.
Hence apart from more wicket taking , he also is building pressure with Dot balls in the batting powerplay. Hence he is the true “power Play Specialist” for the Windies. He would be a real handful in UAE.
Hayden Walsh JR.- Can he Replicate CPL legacy to International Stage?
Walsh is a leg spinner who has played just 17 games so far in international cricket. Out of which initial 8 games were representing USA before getting into Windies setup. Its early days in his international career so far.
However, he has got an amazing distinction of having the best bowling strike rate in the CPL (Caribbean premiere League) from 2018 to 2021. He picks up wickets every 2 overs with an economy of around 8 RPO in CPL.
The above visual will show the fact that in the very brief career so far, he has not been able to replicate his CPL success at the biggest stage yet. These games prior leading up to the ICC WT20 would be a great platform, whenever he manages to get an opportunity to play.
