Delhi capitals were runners-up in IPL2020 . Probably after Sunrisers, the 2nd best bowling attack in the league. Very strong setup with solid batting as well as bowling option, they certainly are contenders this year as well. Balance is the key word for them. In every sense of the word both overseas as well as Indian players are well balanced with Bowling & batting.
Rishabh Pant- X factor
Rishabh Pant has been appointed as Delhi Capital’s captain for IPL 2021. Due to unfortunate injury to Shreyas Iyer, this opportunity comes at the right time for Pant.
He is on a resurgence in his career in last few months. We will have to wait and see if this resurgence coincides with DC go all the way.
Pant had a tremendous test series down under in Australia as keeper as well as played memorable knocks with the bat. Back home against England again he played some match winning knocks in Tests.
This opened the door for his White ball selection and he had good ODI as well as T20 performances. As mentioned this captaincy has come in the right time for him.
If we look at his IPL performances for Delhi in last few seasons, he has been able to play his role of a power hitter to perfection on most occasions. While he was experiencing a dip in his performances , it was very evident in his IPL performances as well. The below visual will show you the same.
The above visual shows the strike rates of Pant along with his boundary frequency since IPL 2017. It shows that Pant takes approximately 4 to 5 balls to hit a boundary ( either 4 or a 6) . Since he is a free scoring batsmen this figure is quite relatable. However in IPL 2020, he was having a tough time finding that frequency as he took 8 balls to find a boundary.
This is also reflecting in his DIP in the Strike rate in IPL 2020. He is just striking at 114 which is very UN-PANT like.
So far in IPL 2021 he has started well, his innings against Rajasthan helped rebuild the innings & importantly he was striking at 151. With these 2 games so far for DC, he also got his Boundary frequency numbers back to pre-2020 levels. We need to see if Pant continues his resurged momentum for the rest of the season. Will Captaincy impact his batting performances ? Time will tell as we watch IPL 2021 unfold.
