KKR 2020 season disappointment
Kolkata Knight Riders are highly competitive outfit. Especially with the squad that they possess. However last season in 2020 was nothing short of a disappointment. Since IPL is such a highly competitive tournament, generally the spots of playoff are not fully decided until the final week of league games. Given this Fact, the early exit of KKR in 2020 was a real blow to the Kolkata fans.
Playing at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Spin does take a prominent role even in T20’s. However in the recent seasons, their spinner’s wicket taking ability has been fastly diminishing. Although 2020 edition was played in UAE & spinners didn’t really make that much of an impression comparatively. If we look at spinners such as Sunil Narine & Kuldeep Yadav’s declining wicket taking ability was even more magnified in UAE in 2020.
Below Visual will give an overview of the 2020 season for KKR spinners.
IPL 2021 – New Spin influx
One of the key features or bright spots from this campaign from a spin perspective was the emergence and rise of Varun Chakravorty. He had a decent series with the above numbers suggesting that he was wicket taking as well as kept the runs tight in the middle of the innings. He was also rewarded with national spot recently. However due to Fitness related issues, he couldn’t make it.
If we look forward for the current IPL 2021 season, there is major influx for KKR spin squad. They have 2 stalwarts joining the squad as mentioned below.
- Harbhajan Singh
The veteran spinners has been bought in by KKR from CSK. He has been very experienced performer for many sides in T20 cricket. As the below visual suggests that he holds a very impressive career. However if we look at the recent 3 seasons , you will see a massive improvement in the strike rate which shows that he has become a real wicket taking weapon in T20 cricket. This is exactly the injection which KKR needed along with Varun Chakraborty for this season in the middle overs.
2. Shakib-Al Hasan
The Bangladeshi maverick all rounder was initially part of successful campaigns for KKR in 2012 & 2014. We all know that he is invaluable asset to any T20 squad.
Hence the below graphic will show that his early stint with KKR was truly majestic. His returns with wickets as well frugal economy rates are testament to this fact. Also in the recent years he was playing for SRH, his numbers got comparatively worse for some reason. However now that he is back to KKR, we will have to wait and see how he goes as Spin bowling option for Morgan
It is a very interesting to understand how KKR management will handle the Spinners. The reason I say this because of the declining trend of Narine the bowler & Kuldeep Yadav. This has to be arrested by the influx of Bhajji & Shakib.
